The newly launched and innovative Brilliance Curriculum is inspirational in nature, aspirational in scope and carefully planned. Teachers have considered the core concepts of their subject to form cross-curricular links between topics to aid greater understanding. For example, the teaching of the importance of water purification in Geography is followed by the teaching of different mechanisms for water purification in Chemistry, with teachers from each department explicitly referring to this cross curricular link. Core concepts in all subjects are used as the catalyst for personal discovery rather than where knowledge and ambition are hampered by exam specifications.

Students are taught in small sets, made possible by our high staff to student ratio. Up to GCSE (or equivalent level), in order for every student to access an appropriate curriculum and make good progress, classes are banded by general ability and additional streaming takes place in English, Mathematics, Science and Languages.

Across the year groups, there is a vibrant range of enrichment activities offered by each department. These include: PiShop where students present on advanced areas of mathematics, weekly subject specific Brilliance Breakfasts, Science Club, Millfield Writers, the Enterprise competition, Computer Programming Club, the Physics Challenge and Debating Society.

In Sixth Form, students may choose to undertake the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ). Older students are offered the opportunity to play a leading role in enrichment. Students host visiting speakers and run evening lectures as well as present Brilliance Breakfasts, with the aim of giving them the chance to share what they enjoy about a subject beyond the curriculum and enhance their presentation skills.

Every aspect of our curriculum is designed to prepare students for applications to Oxbridge and the most competitive universities in the world. An array of extra-curricular activities, seminars, external speakers and clubs allow each student to extend their academic interests outside of the curriculum, and a mentoring programme is in place to support our most able students to channel their efforts appropriately right from the beginning.

Students with Additional Educational Needs (AEN) from Year 9 to Upper Sixth can receive support from our team of experienced and well qualified LSC teachers.

We make sure students with learning differences are identified as early as possible in their Millfield journey to ensure that the most appropriate support is put in place as quickly as possible. This allows our students to develop appropriate learning strategies that will allow them to achieve in line with their potential.

CO-CURRICULAR

Set in 200 acres of Somerset countryside, the school offers a diverse range of academic subjects mixed with sports, creative arts, including art, design, dance, debating, drama and music. The diverse range of subjects and co-curricular activities offered are supported by outstanding facilities including: an equestrian centre, Olympic-sized swimming pool, golf and cricket centres, golf courses, science centres, music halls, theatre, art gallery, tennis bubble and numerous sports pitches.

50+ Highly experienced, full-time and part time, specialist youth sport coaches, who have worked at the top of their sport and bring an exclusive understanding of youth sport development and age specific programmes. The staff includes 18 Olympic athletes, Paralympic, professional team and individual sportsmen and women.

Student-athlete programmes that marry sport, academics and pastoral care to give the best preparation for transition into professional sport; Olympic/Paralympic pathways, UK, US and world university programmes.

Meticulously crafted training and competition experiences starting in Millfield Prep, through Years 9-11 (junior youth) and Years 12-13 (senior youth/adult sport) that engage and challenge everyone regardless of ability or aspiration. We have innovative partnerships with clubs, training groups and National Governing Bodies to provide opportunities inside and outside of Millfield.

Sport is highly valued for everyone at Millfield. We deliberately position and value sport as a critical development experience in youth and whole person development, on a par with academic and pastoral experience, regardless of ability, aspiration and motivation.

We have carefully mapped sport journeys that prepare young athletes for the next step into adult environments, with fixture and competition programmes that challenge everyone.

Flexible multi-sport pathways that enable students to transition across sports e.g. from swimming to cycling, to discover new talents.

We are highly active in youth sport research and place huge importance on it. We partner with world leading Universities to further our work in youth sport and whole person development.

Millfield is a school alive with the Arts. We believe that exposure to the Arts is essential if we are to provide a rounded education for our students.

Art:
Millfield Art Department aims to meet the artistic and creative needs of all our students through exposure to and experience of art from a variety of sources and cultures. Our rich and varied Arts Co-Curricular programme includes:
Millfield Arts Projects: an annual series of activities, workshops and lectures in the Atkinson Gallery.
Sculpture Park: A unique sculpture collection of 29 exhibits within our extensive parkland, including large scale permanent works from artists such as Glynn Williams and Peter Randall-Page.
Sixth Form Mentor Programme: Tutorials and portfolio advice with staff and students from universities such as the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL, London, Falmouth University and City & Guilds of London Art School. Students can experience the works of emerging artists from the UK’s art schools first-hand in the Atkinson Gallery’s annual MA & Other Postgraduates exhibition and even exhibit their own work in the annual student exhibition.

Dance:
Millfield Dance offer over 30 classes throughout the week available in Ballet, Tap, Modern Jazz, Street Dancing, Contemporary and Musical Theatre.

Our six dance tutors offer a wide range of expertise and work to prepare students for exam work, taking junior and senior dance classes, and acting as choreographers for dance shows and school musicals. All dance classes work towards the annual Dance Show in March with over 1,000 parents, staff and students enjoying the show across four nights in the school’s 400-seat theatre.

Drama:
Anyone can get involved in drama, onstage or behind the scenes. We run a full co-curricular programme of weekly sessions designed to develop performing, devising and technical theatre skills. The Meyer Theatre Company develops the talents and skills of our students in an annual programme of theatre training, workshops and theatre visits culminating in at least two large scale productions each year. We offer GCSE Drama and A Level Drama and Theatre studies and put on a bi-annual musical.

Music:

A full range of academic and instrumental tuition is offered in a purpose built Music School. With a growing concert calendar featuring 75+ performances per year, ranging from solo recitals to large-scale ensemble concerts and chamber music concerts, to contemporary evenings, musicals and a whole school House Song. Musicians are lucky to benefit from exceptional facilities including: a 350-seat concert hall, two recording studios, over 25 practice rooms and Steinway Grand Piano.

INTERESTING FACTS

Millfield was founded by RJO (Jack) Meyer in 1935, following his return from India with seven Indian boys, six of whom were princes. He came to be known as ‘Boss’ Meyer. The school was originally based in Millfield House, which is today a boarding house, but then was rented from the Clark family who owned most of Street. The school grew steadily and in 1939 became one of the first independent schools to be co-educational. In 1942, Martin Attlee, son of the then Deputy Prime Minister, Clem, joined the school in the hope of overcoming ‘word-blindness’. The Millfield method was so successful that Martin Attlee went on to university, with the school gaining fame as the first in the country to deal successfully with dyslexic students. Today Millfield, along with Millfield Prep, has some 1700 students and 1000+ employees, but the school’s philosophy remains the same. Millfield still aims to help every individual child to achieve their full potential and discover their brilliance.

Millfield has been represented at every Olympic Games since 1956.

At the London 2012 Olympics, if Millfield were a country they would have placed 12th in the medal table.

If Millfield were a country, they would have placed 15th in the overall medal standings at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, bringing home three golds, five silvers and six bronzes.

WHAT'S NEW

The newly launched and innovative Brilliance Curriculum is inspirational in nature, aspirational in scope and carefully planned. Teachers have considered the core concepts of their subject to form cross-curricular links between topics to aid greater understanding. For example, the teaching of the importance of water purification in geography is followed by the teaching of different mechanisms for water purification in chemistry, with teachers from each department explicitly referring to this cross curricular link. Core concepts in all subjects are used as the catalyst for personal discovery rather than where knowledge and ambition are hampered by exam specifications.

Millfield is championing an initiative to better support the needs of ‘Girls in Sport’ by piloting a programme with a leading women’s health organisation. The aim is to remove taboos around girls’ needs in sport that can hamper or even block their progress, such as puberty and menstruation, in a partnership with The Well HQ. It comes at a time when the country is celebrating women in sport after the Lionesses won the European Football Championship 2022 and reached the final of the 2023 World Cup.

Since the programme launch, we have initiated:

• Student and staff talks about the menstrual cycle and how this affects girls sporting experience and development.
• Education on nutrition and RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport) an energy deficiency as a result of burning more calories than consumed.
• Millfield sports coaches have been educated on how to best support girls during training and from a pastoral perspective.
• Educated on the importance of Sports Bras for breast health and sports performance. The school also welcomed Specialist Bra fitters to give advice and offer scheduled individual fittings for the students and staff.

We will continue developing the programme with:
• Inset training on how to make talking about menstrual cycles easier for students.
• Ensure girls matches are played on main pitches and at better times, to attract spectators.
• Enhancements to female sports kit.
• Sharing knowledge with our local community and schools.
Students are happier, more confident and share new ideas to move the initiative forward. The girls feel more valued and equal and the boys have greater understanding.
