CHARTERHOUSE SCHOOL

God having given, I gave

Founded in 1611, Charterhouse is one of the world’s leading independent boarding schools.

The School is set within an inspiring 250‑acre campus, conveniently located close to London and within 50 minutes of Heathrow and Gatwick airports. With 17 grass sports pitches, 3 full-sized Astroturf pitches, an athletics stadium, a sports centre, 24 tennis courts and a 9-hole golf course, not to mention beautiful lawns and gardens, the campus is one of the best, if not the best, in the country. Combined with a 235-seat theatre and separate music performance and art display spaces, the School’s setting encourages pupils to contribute, and provides a safe community in which to explore and grow.

With more than 80 different sports and activities, including outdoor pursuits, music, drama and other creative subjects all pupils are encouraged to develop existing interests to exciting levels and to take up new ones, with few limits to what can be pursued.

Charterhouse’s academic curriculum promotes academic rigour, develops intellectual curiosity and fosters the ability to learn independently. The curriculum follows the normal path to (I)GCSEs in Year 11, followed by a choice of A level courses or the IB Diploma Programme in the Sixth Form. The School also offers a taught series of timetabled extended projects and academic enrichment electives. The university destinations of leavers reflect both their abilities and the quality of the education provided at the School.

Inclusivity sits at the heart of life at Charterhouse and whether you are a boarder (like most of our pupils) or a day pupil, your House is a welcoming home from home. The Heads of House and their families live in the Houses, and are supported by a team of tutors and pastoral staff.

Charterhouse won ‘Best Careers Programme’ at the Independent School of the Year Awards in 2022. This award is for the school which most impresses the judges with the way in which it helps its students with on-going advice and support on choosing a career and assists them with finding suitable work experience, including internships, and in preparing for future employment.

The Head of Oxbridge Admissions at Charterhouse is supported by a team of designated Oxbridge teachers in each Department to help each candidate make a successful application.  The School also holds a number of talks and presentations for Oxbridge candidates throughout the year and runs extensive practice sessions, mock interviews and tests.

Charterhouse is the first UK school to offer an Entrepreneurship Diploma accredited by the ‘Institute of Entrepreneurship and Enterprise’, aimed at nurturing the next generation of innovators. Sixth Form pupils have the opportunity to gain a level 3 professional qualification in Applied Entrepreneurship, alongside their A Levels or International Baccalaureate courses. In addition, upon successful completion of the CED, pupils will gain sixteen UCAS points. Again, this is the first time such a programme has carried UCAS credits.

CO-CURRICULAR

With more than 80 different clubs, societies and other activities at Charterhouse, all pupils are encouraged to develop existing interests to exciting levels and to take up new ones. The timetable enables all pupils to enjoy themselves across a wide range of sports, outdoor pursuits and creative arts activities, making use of the School’s impressive facilities.

A great many clubs and societies are pupil led and, alongside our sport and outdoor education programmes, offer real leadership opportunities and few limits to what can be pursued.

Since it was launched in 2013, Artifex has become a vibrant part of the annual rhythm of the School. Artifex is produced by the pupils for the pupils and provides leadership opportunities well beyond what is possible in the classroom. With more than 90 events over five days, the pupils put together a huge range of events including Prom in the Park concert, the Great Charterhouse Bake Off, Inter-House Pushkart Race, Inter-House Graffiti, Fashion Competition, and an Open Mic with the School’s Unity and Pride Societies.
