All pupils joining Millfield Prep have an entrance interview with the Head of Year or Head for Admissions. This will last around 15 minutes and centre on the academic interests of the candidate, their extra-curricular activities and experiences. Pupils may also meet with key pastoral staff. Following interview, candidates will usually sit a computer-based reasoning assessment. The assessment can usually be completed remotely and further details are available from the Admissions department. Pupils with support needs will meet staff from the Learning Development Centre.
The Learning Development Centre (LDC) is staffed by specialist and experienced dyslexia teachers, in a centre which is right at the heart of the school.
Early intervention and tracking procedures enable each pupil’s needs to be met. Understanding of the whole child and their strengths allows the correct interventions and enabling environment, to ensure the best possible pupil outcomes and success.
The LDC works together with parents, the pupils and the teachers in the school, to ensure that everyone is aware of an individual’s strengths and how to create the best environment for their learning.
Millfield Prep has earned an excellent reputation for sporting success, recently being named the best sports school in the country by Schools Sport Magazine. The competitive achievements, however, are only part of the picture. Our main focus is teaching pupils a broad, balanced sports programme which is tailored to each individual and prepares children for a lifelong involvement in sport and physical activity, promoting confidence, health and wellbeing. A comprehensive programme of physical and creative activities complements our philosophy and encourages all pupils to try something new and develop their talents.
At Millfield Prep, the Music Department tries to inspire pupils to enjoy their music-making at all levels, whether that be within the classroom or leading the school orchestra. We offer excellent facilities, tuition on a wide range of instruments, a lively and positive atmosphere and endless opportunities for performance.
Music is regarded as an essential element to make a child’s education whole and plays a very important part within the life of the school. All pupils from Year 3 to Year 8 have music timetabled on a weekly basis and every pupil is encouraged to either learn an instrument or sing in a choir.
Productions at Millfield Prep are all-inclusive and embracing and that’s why we have so many. If children wish to be part of the show and can dedicate the requisite time and effort, then they are assured of a role. Public performance brings many benefits for those involved. Pupils relish the teamwork and working closely with their friends, finding and developing new skills, having fun and building confidence.
Most pupils choose to tread the boards, some find the technical side more interesting, while others just enjoy moving scenery and being part of the team. If a pupil shows enthusiasm and aptitude, then we shall encourage and support. One boy was fascinated with all the lighting and sound aspects and was soon running that part of our performances; he is now Production Manager for the Lion King’s world tour.
Nestled beneath the iconic Glastonbury Tor, Millfield Prep is a historic site with many original artefacts still in use today. The oldest building in the school grounds is the Summer House by the pond (also known as ‘The White Lady’s Cottage’ and ‘The Hermitage’). The stone it is built with was once part of Glastonbury Abbey.
Four new campus tour videos were recently released, showcasing everything that Millfield Prep has to offer. Watch them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwb-xwX6HnE&list=PL8nt1XJkoN9vLemVRio5STrF4WPnih17w
